handmade objects of beauty for sale
In keeping with the spirit of the new year - out with the old and in with the new - I am offering the last of my handmade journals at a reduced price. Generally they range from $50 to $30 (Canadian dollars) plus shipping. Now I am offering the books at about 35% off with free shipping in Canada and US.
Sanctuary journals are books of my own design based on traditional bookbinding methods. I use an assortment of paper in bookbinding: heavy bond for writing, watercolor paper for artistic ventures, black and colored paper for photos or drawing and hand-colored papers I make with acrylic paint in large sheets and then tear down to size. The cover is made of painted canvas - it is primed and sealed, dried, cut to the appropriate size, then painted/patterned with acrylic paints in a variety of techniques. A clear finish is applied as the final layer to ensure durability. To assemble the book the paper is folded and nested in groupings called signatures. Each signature must be sewn to the cover. I make a template to help me match the sewing holes of the paper to the spine. The holes are punched and the paper is sewn in a continuous running stitch from the last signature to the first and back again. The process of creating the journals with a variety of techniques makes each one unique.
West Coast Collection I've been influenced by the landscape of Vancouver Island where I moved a couple of years ago. These final four journals of the series have painted canvas covers decorated with a canvas print photograph from my photography collection. Blank heavy weight artist paper in cream or white makes this a great journal for drawing and painting in.

the random collection Influenced by my paper collection this group contains various size journals with various color and weights of paper. All are suitable for writing in, some are suitable for various art pursuits of drawing, gluing, painting etc. All covers are handpainted canvas, all journals are hand sewn with colored Irish linen thread (some have beads on the spine). The black and colored papers are Hahnemühle Bugra papers and are lightfast and acid free. Their slightly textured surface is great for drawing (light colored pencil crayons and pastels) and writing (light and metallic gel pens work well).
