Update for 2012
I have gone through various experiments and experiences with encaustic painting. I made encaustic medium with local beeswax mixed with damar resin (to increase hardness). Because of the pollen in the wax, the medium had a gold tone to it. I did some experiments but no work resulted from this yet as I have not found the right work set up that allows for proper exhaust for the fumes from the medium.
I am still experimenting with plaster on wood - how the surface can be textured, layered, scraped, colored etc. and am now looking around my studio to see how mixed I can make my media using sheet copper, wire, clay, plaster and wax. Looking forward to the experimentation and new works in 2012. I'm thinking small, portable and wearable.
What has gone before
of runes, wings and keys
This piece called "time flies - x marks the spot" was created for a show in 2011. The words/concepts "of runes, wings and keys" were the starters. The piece is heavily textured using carved stamps (the "x" rune of partnership and the double "x" rune of fertility and new beginnings. The central piece I made out of copper and mounted on 1.25 in. tubes so it hovers above a raised "x" that can be viewed through the key hole. Click on the image for a larger view

More to come in this series . . .
The piece below is approximately one square foot and is heavily textured with random patterns and word remnants. The words below it are from my chapbook "peel the red apple". Click on the image to see a close up showing some detail.
after the apple - plaster & acrylic on wood
i keep telling you to peel the red apple. before you bite into it,
peel the apple. hang the skin from the tree, proof of your kill.
bite into it. swallow. i keep telling you. use your teeth.
have you learned nothing from history?
